According to author Sapphire, the author whose novel inspired "Precious," Madonna was set to produce the movie & Brandy was also set to play the main character.

Sapphire, the author whose novel inspired the much-buzzed-about film, told Entertainment Weekly about the many offers she received and eventually turned down to take her book to the big screen.

One of them came from a producer who thought R&B singer and “Moesha” star Brandy should play the obese, illiterate New York City teenager. “I remember this one producer told me that he had found Precious—and it was going to be Brandy,” a shocked Sapphire said. “Excuse me? I literally almost hung up on him.”

She even received an offer from pop icon Madonna. “Then Madonna wanted to produce it. I was like, ‘Madonna?’ I don’t think this is her film.”

Filmmaker Lee Daniels (Monster’s Ball) eventually won the rights to make the movie, casting Sidibe as Precious and comedian Mo’Nique as her abusive mother, Mary Jones. Precious is now open in select cities.

Anna Paquin Reports for Duty

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
Gearing up for another workday, Anna Paquin was spotted arriving on the set of “The Romantics” in Long Island, New York today (November 5).

The “True Blood” babe looked a bit tuckered out as she strolled past the nearby shutterbugs, sporting a black coat with a zebra-print scarf and jeans.

Adam Brody grabs a hot drink at Starbucks in between shooting his new movie, The Romantics, in New York’s Long Island on Saturday morning (November 7).

Yesterday, the 29-year-old actor was seen grabbing Starbucks with Dianna Agron, who recently explained why she’s not with the rest of the Glee cast back in L.A. She wrote, “I am so sorry that I won’t be able to attend the Barnes and Noble event today with the rest of the cast. I was given an incredible opportunity to work for the next month and we are on the east coast. We feel so lucky to have the support of our fans, and I had an amazing time meeting so many of you in New York this past week. Again, apologies, but do not fear, the ones you will be meeting today are gold. I already miss them very much.”

Bananas!

Taylor Jacobson, who has worked with stylist Rachel Zoe for four years as seen on Bravo’s The Rachel Zoe Project, was fired this morning, effective immediately, according to sources.

Jacobson, who was often at odds with her boss and coworker Brad Goreski on the reality show but helped Zoe’s celebrity styling business run smoothly, wrote on her Twitter account: “Today is an end of an era and a beginning of a new professional chapter. Looking forward to what the future brings…!!!”

No word on the cause behind the termination or the future of the reality show, which has shot for two seasons.

Meanwhile, Jacobson is reportedly saying it was her decision to leave. Fashionista.com posted an email that she sent to her contacts: “After four amazing years at Rachel Zoe Corporation, I’m saddened and exhilarated at the same time to announce my departure. After much thought and consideration, I have decided to take the challenging leap to go off and style on my own.”

Zoe’s rep Carrie Gordon would only confirm to PEOPLE, “Taylor Jacobson is no longer with Rachel Zoe, Inc.”

I read this sometime before high school, before 1998.

All I remember is that there is a group of kids in town, including a first-person male narrator I think, and each of them has a special thing-- not superpowers, just a thing that sets them apart. Then this kid's family moves in. He introduces himself to the entire group. He wears a green sock on one foot because he's that-footed and that makes him run faster; he can run faster than the fastest kid in the group. He has more freckles than the kid with the most freckles, and there's a moment when everyone pauses and the narrator can tell they're doing math in their heads. He has more pets than the kid with most pets, including at least one goat. His family has more kids than the kid with the most siblings, including twin boys, Sam and Uel, who they didn't know were going to be twins so they just split the name. He might be able to blow a bigger bubble than someone; basically, he's better at everything they'd valued about themselves, and suddenly things suck.

There is more to the book, but I don't remember anything else.

Julie Taymor’s Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark hasn’t had the easiest time making it to the Broadway stage. On paper, it would seem to have everything going for it: a big budget, one of theatre’s brightest directors, songs written by Bono and the Edge, and a cast that’s had Evan Rachel Wood and Alan Cumming attached. Still, the show was hit hard by hiatus last month — and then there was the little matter of casting Peter Parker. Taymor’s Across the Universe lead Jim Sturgess had participated in readings and workshops, but he never officially signed on. Who did Taymor have in mind for the role, if anyone?

While I was talking today to Bright Star’s talented Ben Whishaw (the full chat will be coming to Movieline next week), we landed on the topic of Taymor, who directed him in her upcoming adaptation of The Tempest. As the actor discussed her, suddenly the thought crossed my mind: Whishaw himself is bookishly handsome, has a theatrical background, and has sung in roles before (including one scene in Bright Star). Surely Taymor approached him to play Peter Parker at some point?

So I asked. And, pay dirt.

“She did, yes!” Whishaw said. “She did ask me to speak to her about it.”

Still, despite Taymor’s vote of confidence, Whishaw wasn’t sure he’d be right for the role. “I don’t feel confident enough as a singer,” he admitted, though he has nothing but praise for Taymor’s methods.

“She’s working at a very furious pace. You almost have the sense that she could do anything on a project: she could act in it, she could light it, she could design it, she could direct it. She’s working at a real speed, and you’ve either got to be up to her speed or lag behind. I like that kind of challenge.”

Certainly, a Spider-Man musical would have posed a very different challenge than the sedate Bright Star. “Yeah,” Whishaw said, laughing. “And maybe not a bad one! I’d love to do a play or something with her, or even another type of musical. I’m just not a strong enough vocalist for Spider-Man.”

Thank Baby Jesus he said no holy shit. The role has been cast now, though - Reeve Carney got the part and I think he'll be awesome.

Recap: I work at my university's library at the circulation desk. It's basically a long counter with four computers on it. Both ends of the counter are open and so is our back room (I'm not 100% why it doesn't have a door, but whatever). Basically, if you're standing in front of about the middle of the desk, you can see right into the very open room. We're also like five feet from the front doors of the library. At this time, I had a bowl of reheated pasta with a roll. I had been on my break, but my co-worker was ill and she had to make a run for the washroom. So I left my lunch on the counter and went out. And this is the basis for the most bizarre customer experience I've ever had.

It's a typical customer interaction. He is returning some books. I take them and sign them in, then bid him good day. Oh, wait -

Yes, sir, that is my lunch.

Yes, it does smell very good.

No, sir, I can't share, but I will laugh like I found your joke amusing.

You have a good day, too.

Next!

Wait, sir, you're not supposed to be back here -

....

Is that my lunch in your hands?

Sir?

Sir!

Oh... you're walking out the front doors.

Um, ok, then.

:( I had to borrow a couple buck from my co-worker to get a candy bar when she came back. I seriously have no idea what was up with this guy. We couldn't even look him up in the system because, even though your name comes across the screen when we discharge stuff, I had already begun a new interaction with the next customer by the time this happened. It was just... weird.

I'm trying to remember a trilogy of books I read when I was 12-ish. I think they were written in the 1970s or '80s.

The main character was a thief who got caught breaking into a house. I want to say that the house belonged to a man who was a sage or a wizard or something. Instead of turning him in, the man makes the boy his apprentice.

I don't remember much else about the story other than that there was a girl who I think was part of a troupe of actors who died who joins them later, and they find a computer from our time, which is when you discover that the story's actually set in the future. The computer teaches them to speak our language by showing pictures of clouds and stuff and then playing audio of each word.

I'm a little shaky on the girl, though. I'm positive that a girl ends up becoming a major character in the story, but the acting troupe thing might be from another book and I'm just confusing them.

Sammy Sosa tells friends he is comfortable in his own skin.

But a widely circulated photo of the former Cubs slugger makes his skin color appear several shades lighter.

"I'm not trying to be Michael Jackson," Sosa told former Cubs employee Rebecca Polihronis.

Sosa was photographed recently during an appearance at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.

"He is going through a rejuvenation process for his skin," Polihronis said. "Women have it all of the time. He was surprised he came out looking so white. I thought it was a body double. Part of (the photo appearance) is just the lighting.

"He is in the middle of doing a cleansing process to his skin. The picture is deceiving. He said, 'If you saw me in person, you would be surprised. When you see me in person, it is not going to seem like the picture.'

"People who saw him in person did not react the same way. He can't believe it is such a big deal."

Polihronis, the former Cubs Care/Community Relations manager for the team, said Sosa told her he has used moisturizing treatment at night on his face.

"He has always been concerned with the way he looks," she said. "Probably just bad timing going to an awards show."

Among the possible side effects for some laser skin rejuvenation methods include discoloration of the skin. The treated area may become lighter or darker in appearance.

"He was doing a dermatological skin process after years and years (of playing baseball) in the sun," Polihronis said. "It is what a lot of people do. It did come out looking weird (in the picture."

(none of these are major, they're just frustrating having to hear them every thirty seconds).

We have a sale on right now: Buy one Get One 50% off all Tops (excluding Clearance). Straightforward right? Of course not.

"Does this mean I can mix and match any shirt or does it have to be the same?" Good question. No, you can pick any two tops.
"What about this one that is under the clearance sign?" No, you cannot use this. Good question though.
"Are pants included?" No. This is a sale on tops.
"Can I mix this camisole with this sweater?" Yes you may.
"Can I use these pants and this sweater?" NO.
"This sale is too confusing. Why can't I get this sweater and these pants for the sale?" Because it is a sale on tops.
"I bought the velour suit and it was supposed to be buy one get one fifty percent off. Why isn't it that way?" Because you HAVE TO BUY TWO TOPS, dammit.
"Your advertising is misleading."

HOW? How is it misleading? Where does it say pants? I do not understand your logic, customers.

Wait, I got more.

We also do redline clearance, which means it's stuff that we want to blow out of the store. We used to ticket them to a slightly lower price but they got smart and changed it to a red slash so now it takes less time to set up. The prices we run on them start at 50% off, and drop to 70% off. Since we just started, they're at 50%, which is actually an increase in price, but shhh.

So a lady brings over a shirt and asks me to check the price. I told her it was 18.44, and she said, "Well I thought it would be cheaper, since it says off the lowest price." ...The price on the ticket was 36.95. I said as much to her, and she said, "Your signs are misleading."

HOW is it misleading? It says off the LOWEST ticketed price. There's only one price on it. How is that misleading? Goddamn.

When Christina Aguilera enlisted Ladytron to write songs for her upcoming fourth album, 'Light & Darkness,' she could have wielded her diva powers and told the British electro-pop group exactly what she was looking for. Thankfully, that's not what happened. "She just told us she wanted to enter our world," Ladytron multi-instrumentalist Reuben Wu tells Spinner. "She didn't want to give us any idea what she wanted the music to be. She wanted us to do our own thing."

... it was pretty shocking how great her voice is  )
